As the name suggests, Chadar(sheet of ice) trek is the frozen river trek as you would be walking on massive slabs of ice spread across miles for almost 5-6 days. The experience will be no less than walking on thick glass like river with dramatic mountains on both the sides providing spectacular views.

Ideal time to take this trek is from January mid to February, that is when the Zanskar is in its best shape.

The maximum altitude of the trek is 11,100 feet and distance covered on foot is approx. 105 km. On completion of this trek, one reaches this gigantic frozen waterfall called Naerak which is the highlight of this trek.

What adds uniqueness to this trek is the adverse weather conditions that one has to survive in. The average temperature during the day falls to minus 15 degree Celsius, dropping further to minus 20 to 25-degree centigrade during the night making it almost unbearable for trekkers. The camping conditions, unlike in other trekking expeditions, are extremely tough making it the most adventurous and difficult treks in the India.

All trekkers are required to spend a minimum of 3 nights in Leh before starting off with the trek as per the new Regulations and Standard Operating Procedures to be followed during Chadar Trek. Day 1 is majorly for resting as adjusting to high altitude and cold are the two most important things here. On day 2, team will be taken to the market for a small acclimatization walk where they can also buy necessary woollens if required. Other than that, trekkers are advised not to indulge in any extra physical activity on day 1 & 2.

Day 3

Medical Check Up

So on day 3, the trekkers will be required to undergo a medical test at the Sonam Norbhu Memorial Hospital as per the new government guidelines w.e.f 2018.Only after you get clearance from the officier will you be allowed to take the trek. During these three days in Leh, one shouldn’t miss out to explore the beautiful city and Tibetan food with a view.

Day 4

Leh to Tsomo (70Kms on wheel, 15kms on feet)

The trek officially starts on the 4th day after 4 hrs long drive covering 70 kms from Leh to Tsomo via chilling and Tilad Do. During this drive, you would experience some of the most spectacular sights like Gurudwara Pathar Saheb, magnetic hills, confluence of the two rivers namely Zanskar and Indus at Nimmu. We will be taking a pit stop at these places for some group pictures. You will reach the first campsite, after 1-2 hours of walking your way through the snowy patches encompassing some ascents and descents. Overnight stay at the campsite in Tsomo.

Day 5

Tsomo to Tibb Cave (14kms hike)

You will be covering 14 kms in approx. 7 hours to reach Tibb from Tsomo with maximum altitude of 10,760 feet. As you make your way to the campsite of Tibb Cave, you will be seeing some of the most beautiful formations of nature like the frozen waterfalls that stand frozen in time. The source of some of these frozen waterfalls is still unknown and there are a lot of myths and beliefs about them. The mighty Zanskar will be flowing all along with you on the trail and the emerald green water will have a smoothing effect. Lunch will be done midway to Tibb cave.

Overnight stay at the campsite in Tibb.

Day 6

Tibb Cave to Naerak Frozen Waterfall

The 13 km long trail will bring you the chance of seeing the most scenic landmark of Chadar Trek, that is the frozen waterfall. Naerak waterfall is one of the most amazing waterfalls one would ever see in their lifetime, no wonder why it attracts trekkers and adventurers from across the globe. This is the most picturesque point in the entire trek so we’ll spend some time clicking pictures here.

Hot lunch will be served on your way to Naerak. Some other amazing sights of the place are the local yaks which are found grazing at the place.

Overnight stay at the campsite near Naerak.

Day 7

Naerak to Tibb /Tsomo(Return starts)

This is a 13 km trek back to Tibb/Tsomo from Naerak. But a unique thing is that the trekkers are not going to see the same view or the scenes again on their way back. The Zanskar river keeps changing its form as per the change of the temperature so the scenes are not going to be the same. You will also come across slippery uneven ice surface making this area tough to walk on and cross.

Overnight stay at the campsite in Tibb/Tsomo.

Day 8

Tibb/Tsomo to Leh

The last day of the trek is going to be strenuous. Retracing the steps, we took, this will be the last chance to look at the majestic and mesmerizing Chadar, which you will miss for sure. It is a 15 km trek and the maximum altitude of the trek is around 10, 550 feet. It would take around 8 hours approx to complete this trek. You will get a lot of sunshine only in the early morning and then the place becomes windy. You can take a dip in the zanskar river on this day  if all goes all.

Drive back to Leh from the last campsite and spend the day roaming around in Leh City. The last night of the trip is arranged at the hotel so the trekkers have to head towards their hotel/homestay right after sightseeing.  Here you’ll be provided with your trek completion certificate

Day 9

Departure from Leh

The trek officially ends on the 9th day and the trekkers make their way back from Leh to their respective cities. But, on the last day, a small meal is arranged for the trekkers. This is the last day when the trekkers would be together for this trek and then the trekkers make their own way.

What Our customers say

Being a female solo traveller, my utmost concerns were the safety and hygiene factor that came along with the 9 day trip and to my relief, every aspect of my concerns were taken care of, be it the female support staff or provision of toilet tents.

Chadar Trek FAQ

Most frequently asked questions

Any high altitude trek in Himalayan region has a risk component associated with it but to be prepared is the only way to master it.

Temperature shall generally revolve between -5 and +5 degree during daytime while in Leh. During trekking daytime temperature shall revolve between -15 and -5 degree, night temperature can plunge up to -25 degree.

During the period of Chadar trek, most of the hotels/accommodation in Leh will be closed as this is not a tourist season. Accommodation will be provided in a standard hotel/guesthouse in comfortable rooms on twin/triple/quad sharing basis. No personal room can be guaranteed.

The unique thing about this trek is the flat gradient that it offers with minimal involvement of climbing, so there’s hardly any gain in altitude (it’s infact less than the altitude of Leh). So once you are properly acclimatized , you shouldn’t be facing any challenges with health. What makes this trek difficult is the extreme cold and glassy terrain which is slightly slippery. All what matters here is your preparedness in terms of gears and battling with your mental conflicts.

Twin/triple sharing tents during trek shall be provided with 2 sleeping bags per person.

You can hire a porter who will carry your bag which should not weigh more than 12 kgs. This will help you to trek on the frozen river of Zanskar without any burden. The normal rate of porter will be 750/- per day per bag which may increase during the season. If you need a porter then booking one beforehand would be advisable.

No, Non-veg food can’t be provided.

Yes, hot drinking water will be provided. During the trek, Zanskar river water will be used as drinking water after boiling.

Since there is no running water available due to frozen pipes, it’s the set practice of the region to provide water for limited use only because in extreme weather conditions even the fuel costs a lot.

Dry toilet pit tents will be there during the trek. While staying in Leh guest house, in case the pipes get stuck by frozen water due to cold, you have to use the common toilet.

You must carry enough warm clothing suitable for this freezing weather. Please refer to the list attached**

Each group will have an oxygen cylinder, first aid medicine kit containing medicines required to handle high altitude sickness problem. As this is a hard graded trek, chances of physical strain are always there. If any critical situation arises for any of the trekkers then the decision of the group leader will be final and has to be obeyed irrespective of age, gender etc.

If the trek gets cancelled due to bad weather, authority intervention, army intervention or for any other unforeseen circumstances then no refund will be processed as mentioned above.

We cannot confirm this right now but we can definitely try to help you get extra accommodation if needed.

Usual group sizes vary from 18-22 people for other vendors but Chindi Safar will be taking a small batch of 12-15 people for a better experience as you don’t want the beauty of chadar to be lost in a crowd.

Yes, we will provide pick up or drop to and from the Hotel/homestay at a pre specified time.
